I think she is naturally cantankerous and loves to argue the case about absolutely anything, even if she has not got a clue whether she is right or not as in this case. I told my father thaat he was his own worst enemy by actually telling her about it in the first place. If it were me, I would have just replaced the chimney without her knowing at all and she would never have been any the wiser. My father, though, is too honest for his own good, even though a little white lie would have been beneficial to everyone in this situation, he still could not bring himself to do it.
